CU Music program gets a boost

At a time where music education programs are showing their worth in the real world, the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder announced a ten year strategic plan to build the program, and it’s impact on the campus and students. The plan will be presented to the public tonight at the CU Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the year. The music program also recently benefited from private donations, a part of a record setting year of fundraising for the school. The music department choral masters or doctoral students can now apply for the Joan Catoni Conlon Graduate Choral Fellowship to help fund their studies.

From art flop to opera hit

Going back a few years in art history: Cecilia Giménez made the news when she restored a fresco of Jesus Christ in the worst way, which became a pop-culture hit, inspiring meme’s galore. The painting became well known as “Monkey Jesus,”among other aliases. Now, a Denver artist, inspired by the painting, has created an comicedic opera as a satirical homage to the renewed painting. The opera features Boulder artists Adam Ewing, Amy Maples, Amanda Lucarini, Anastasia Jamieson and Kristyn Christman-McCarty from the Ars Nova Singers. The first staged reading was in Boulder in 2014, and now the satirical opera will travel to Borja, Spain. The group raised more than $23,000 in a grassroots campaign to take the opera to Spain, and plans to bring the opera back to Colorado in the future.
