COLONIAL HEIGHTS — After repeated talks, the Colonial Heights School Board approved the school system’s 2016-2017 budget at its March 22 meeting.
The school operating fund for the fiscal year 2017 totals $37,905,363, an increase of 5.11 percent, or $1,841,214, from the approved fiscal year 2016 budget.
Funds coming from the city toward the school budget are equal to 53.5 percent of the total budget, in the amount of $21,243,353, an increase of $780,622 from the previous budget. State revenue accounts for 37.6 percent of the budget, with a total of $14,251,838.
The school system will receive $1,910,851 in federal funds, an increase of $67,000, which comes from several different grants and national programs. Other miscellaneous funds for the budget equal an increase of $119,000, totaling $499,321.
The budget includes the proposed pay increase for employees, allowing for an average of a 2 percent increase per employee. The entire pay increase will total approximately $487,580.
The budget also showed another positive move for employees.
“We also benefitted this year with health insurance, which was a 16.1% decrease in rates, which is outstanding news,” said Troy Hedblom, the Assistant Superintendent for Business Services for the schools.
The school system budget will now be sent to the City Council for final approval.
