Meltdown of Greenland Ice Sheet Introducing Fresh Water Into Ecosystem

Meltdown of ice in the Arctic has shown to have made several different waves in the scientific community, from flooding coastal lands to affecting the quality of drinking water in several nations. Now, you can add one more thing to the list.

Data from the oceans near Northeast Greenland have shown large amounts of fresh water, due to the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. The influx of fresh water into the ocean then flows into the fjords of Greenland, which influences local ecosystems.

According to the study, this freshwater makes it harder for the nutrient-rich bottom water to rise and soak in the sunlight, which in turn affects the production of plankton algae. These algae are an important factor in the fish population of Greenland, which equals about 88 percent of Greenland’s export economy.
