CHESTERFIELD — A Chesterfield man convicted of shooting his friend following a dispute outside the victim’s home was sentenced to 33 years with 18 suspended in Chesterfield Circuit Court on Wednesday, April 20.
Sherman Hurrye, Jr., 37, pleaded guilty back in August of 2015 to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Hurrye was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and first-degree murder; both charges were withdrawn by prosecutors in a plea agreement. The agreement also stated that Hurrye would be sentenced to no more than 15 years of incarceration.
On Feb. 5, Hurrye shot and killed Terrell J. Brown, 35, in Brown’s front yard.
The victim’s girlfriend, Marianne Sedor, witnessed the encounter and would have testified against Hurrye if the case had gone to trial.
According to Sedor, earlier in the night the pair had met with Hurrye to play pool and darts. Later in the evening, Brown and Sedor drove to the Par 3 Motel, located on Jefferson Davis Highway, where Sedor said she saw the defendant drive away, and Brown began to follow him.
Hurrye drove to the Wawa at Woods Edge Road and Jefferson Davis Highway, with Brown following behind. After leaving the Wawa, Brown continued to follow Hurrye, losing him somewhere in the Tinsberry neighborhood where Hurrye lived.
Brown arrived at Hurrye’s residence, parked and approached the home, telling Sedor to stay in the vehicle.
Brown knocked on the door, and the two men talked for a few minutes. Sedor said she then saw Hurrye slam the door, and Brown knocked again. When Hurrye reopened the door, Sedor said he was holding a handgun. He then shot at Brown once, and Brown began to back away into the yard. Hurrye then came off of the porch, shooting once again, hitting Brown in the chest.
Sedor said that Hurrye then got in his vehicle and drove away.
Brown died at the scene from the gunshot wound.
During sentencing, Hurrye was given 30 years with 18 suspended for the murder charge, and 3 years imprisonment for the charge of using a firearm while committing a felony, for a total of 15 years.
