DINWIDDIE — The Hopewell Blue Devils narrowly escaped a loss against the Dinwiddie Generals on Friday.
During the first half, the Blue Devils were in the lead, with senior Daniel Saunders scoring four of the game’s total of six 3-point shots for Hopewell.
Although they had a slow start, the Generals held their own, ending the first half of the game trailing by only 14 points.
Although Dinwiddie never took the lead pointwise, the second half was their game.
“Dinwiddie did an excellent job of making a game out of it because they had plenty of chances to roll over and they never did,” said Hopewell Coach Robbie St. John.
During the second half, Hopewell shot 10 free throws, sinking a total of 6 of them. Senior Darrell Taylor missed five out of his eight free throw shots.
Dinwiddie sunk four three-point shots in the second half, and with less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock, Dinwiddie was only three points away from catching up to the Blue Devils.
“I think the pressure of trying to win out to get seeding for our conference weighed a little heavy on them. We left a ton of room for improvement as far as our late game,” said St. John.
But Hopewell finished the game out on top, defeating the Generals 68-65. The Generals will end the season with no wins against the Blue Devils.
Daniel Saunders scored 18 points for Hopewell, with Deonte Jones close behind with 17 points. Johnie Harrison scored 16 points, sinking the most two-point shots throughout the whole game for Hopewell.
The Blue Devils will face Matoaca next, followed by Thomas Dale.
