PRINCE GEORGE — The abandoned Carson Elementary School in Prince George will soon be cleared and construction on a new fire station has been set to begin on April 28.
The school, which was built in 1935 and has been vacant since 2003, will be completely demolished and trees on the site cleared to make way for the new fire station and community center.
The Prince George Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve an $83,738 contract in mid-March to complete the project.
According to George Colson with the County Administration office, the project is on track to begin as soon as the electricity at the site is cut off, and transformers and electric poles are removed.
“The contractor just got the permit and they’re going to start demolition on April 28, first thing in the morning,” said Colson.
The project entails demolishing all five of the current buildings on the site, and clearing nearby landscaping to provide more space. After the site is cleared, construction on the new building will begin. The space is to be the site of the Carson Fire Station/Community Center. Construction on the new building is proposed to cost a total of close to $2.2 million.
Construction of the new building will be completed by Perkinson Construction.
