HOPEWELL — Two suspects have been arrested after someone broke in and stole a charity jar from the counter of a sandwich shop.
According to Sgt. Damon Stoker with the Hopewell Police Department, Marita Berra-Brown, 48, and her son, Victor Brown II, 22, have been taken into custody in relation to the incident.
On Aug. 20, around 9:21 p.m., someone threw a rock through the window of the front door of Sub Hut, located on Maryland Avenue in Hopewell.
Sub Hut owner Chase Rigsby said he arrived at the restaurant to find the window on the front door smashed in, and checked to see what was missing, only to find that all that was gone was a jar which contained money for charity. Nothing else from the establishment was missing.
Rigsby says he is dumbfounded by the incident.
“It’s mind-blowing to me why someone would do this,” Rigsby said. “It was just a senseless break-in,” Rigsby said.
Rigsby added that the charity jar probably only contained around $17, and was intended to be donated to different charities involving children.
Several witnesses were interviewed, as well as the two suspects, who were not brought in at the time due to lack of probable cause, police said.
“After the investigation developed, the two suspects were arrested,” Stoker said.
Berra-Brown and her son were taken into custody on Aug. 28 and 29, and are being charged with burglary and petit larceny.
