PRINCE GEORGE — Heritage Bridge, located in Prince George, is closed indefinitely due to deterioration.
The bridge on Heritage Road crosses Wall’s Run Creek. Following a safety inspection, representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation decided to close the bridge, calling the structure a safety hazard.
“While the bridge is made of steel, the support beams are wooden, and show signs of deterioration,” said Lindsay LeGrand with VDOT.
The bridge, which was built in 1953, will be closed until further notice, as VDOT is still inspecting the structure and viewing options to repair it.
“They’re currently assessing what they can do to fix it, but as of now the bridge is closed indefinitely,” said LeGrand.
The following detours have been set up in the area in order to route traffic away from the bridge:
-Northbound Heritage Road – Take James River Drive (Route 10) east to Old Stage Road (Route 609) south back to Heritage Road (Route 635) north.
-Southbound Heritage Road – Take Old Stage Road (Route 609) north to James River Drive (Route 10) west back to Heritage Road (Route 635) south.
According to LeGrand, the damage to the bridge is strictly age-related, and has not been affected by recent rainy weather.
