PETERSBURG — Several buildings in Petersburg were affected by a blaze early Sunday morning in Petersburg.
According to Division Chief and Interim Fire Marshall Rufus Atkins with the Petersburg Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services, the blaze was spotted around midnight Sunday night. The fire completely destroyed the building at 32 South Sycamore St, and spread into the buildings located next door at 34 South Sycamore St, and 5,7,9 & 11 West Wythe Street.
“32 South Sycamore had extensive damage, which we’re clearing out now,” said Atkins.
The building at 32 South Sycamore is believed to have been a residence, which had been vacant and boarded up for a long time. The building on Wythe Street contained a florist and a hair salon, which are now closed due to damage.
There were no casualties due to the blaze, but one resident in a second-floor apartment was displaced without injury.
Atkins said the cause of the fire is still unknown.
“The Petersburg Fire Marshall is still conducting an investigation as to why this fire broke out,” said Atkins.
More information will be available once the investigation is completed.
